Perishable Goods Warehouse insulated with Foamular Foil Faced Board
Foamular Extruded Polystyrene has been extensively used in the renovations of GlaxoSmithKline's Ermington warehouse.
GlaxoSmithKline produces consumer products for pharmacies and supermarkets, some of which must be stored below 25 ºC. In order to keep their factory cool and reduce cooling bills, 1100 m² of 50mm Foil Faced Foamular was installed in the roof.
GlaxoSmithKline’s employees have already noticed the difference, with the warehouse now much cooler and energy bills much lower. Installing Foamular also will help GlaxoSmithKline meet their green targets by reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions.
Austpac Salvaging & Recycling completed the installation. Four men worked through the night to complete the job, working in sections to minimise disruption. Foamular was simply cut to shape where needed, clipped to the existing roofing system then the joints where taped up. This simple process saved time and limited the amounts of trades required.
Each year GlaxoSmithKline’s Ermington plant produces more than 65 million packs of Panadol, 10 million bottles of paediatric liquids and 25 million tubes of toothpaste. They simply could not afford to shutdown or interrupt production and dispatch, so all Foamular installation was done at night while the factory was closed. Foamular is lightweight and easy to handle, which meant less scaffolding and support was needed, making it much easier to install and minimising the need to move items around the factory.
Foamular was retrofitted under the existing steel framed roof, which meant many cuts and alterations to the board. Extruded polystyrene is closed cell and ridged, so it does not lose any strength or insulation properties once cut and can easily be cut and shaped with simple tools.
Foamular 50mm has an R-value of R1.78 but when Foil is added, the R-value becomes R2, increasing the insulations effectiveness. Foamular Foil Faced board is also fire rated, receiving a Group 1 Material as per part C.1.10A of the BCA. (Part 3, walls and ceilings) this makes it ideal for a variety of commercial applications, including car parks, apartments, manufacturing, high-rise and retail.

Concrete possesses very poor thermal properties but it is essential for modern large-scale construction. Foamular has been successfully used to insulate under commercial concrete slabs, creating an efficient thermal barrier that reduces temperature fluctuations and improves energy efficiency.

Commercial buildings require a complex system of insulation to make them as efficient as possible. Under concrete slab insulation can be particularly difficult because thick insulation will reduce head height and there is often a need for zero flammability. Austech has a range of products available to help you meet your under slab insulation needs.
